We now have a highly experienced Physiotherapist joining the Modern Pilates team!
Dr Fereshteh Pourkazemi is a senior musculoskeletal physiotherapist, and a senior lecturer at The University of Sydney. Fereshteh has more than 15 years of experience in practice, teaching, and research in prevention and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and chronic pain management.
She is also a passionate artist working to bring the Arts, Health and Education together and address different aspects of human pain with a holistic view of its complexities.
Fereshteh’s unique clinical approach is to enable patients to understand their pain by combining the visual arts and education, and empowering patients to return to their desired physical activities. As part of her pain management skills, she uses many different evidence-based techniques including, but not limited to, Cognitive Functional Therapy, Graded Motor Imagery, the concept of DIMs and SIMs (Dangers in Me/Safeties in Me), and gradual exposure to exercise using individualised Pilates program. In her recent research, she has been investigating the impacts of visual arts on pain and found the approach “Paint the Pain”, as she calls it, a very beneficial addition to the common treatments. These approaches are decided upon, based on a comprehensive assessment (during the first session) and patients’ goals.
Fereshteh consults face to face, 1-2 days per week at Modern Pilates where she reviews complex musculoskeletal pain disorders and works closely with all the staff to ensure the highest level of clinical care is provided within the practice.
